If the trouble persists after taking the steps mentioned, owners should on no account try and carry out work meant for specialist servie agents, which are equipped with the proper tools. b2) If this does not work, unscrew the base of the carb and remove the jet. Mixture will come out if the feed is working properly
1. FUEL FEED
f) Carburetor not fitted correctly
f) Adjust the carburetor to the vertical position.
3. IGNITION
a) Dirty plugs
a) Disconnect H.T. leads from plugs and check whether there is a spark when the end of the cable is held against the frame and kickstart pedal is depressed. Clean plug and regap to 20 thousands.
b) Plug insulator cracked or broken
b) Fit new plug
c) Earth button or switch struck in contact position
c) Release it
d) Contact points dirty or burnt
d) Clean with special file or emery cloth
e) Contact points incorrectly set
e) Re-adjust to correct gap of 12 thou.
f) Contact points broken or pitted
f) Fit new points
g) Incorrect timing
g) Rest. See "resetting or adjusting the timing" section
h) H.T. cables cracked
h) Replace
4. TOO LITTLE POWER
a) Silencer blocked
a) Decoarbonize
b) Inlet manifold loose
b) Replace the gasket between the manfold and cylinders and tighten. Tighten nuts on cylinder heads.
c) Exhaust ports blocked
c) Decarbonize ports, cylinder heads and pistons
d) Cylinder base gasket faulty
d) Replace
5. INSUFFICIENT COMPRESSION
a) Plugs not sufficiently tightened
a) Tighten
b) Cylinder heads not seated correctly
b) Locate heads correctly and secure nuts
c) Cylinder head gaskets leaking
c) Renew
d) Piston rings stuck in grooves
d) Clean rings and grooves
6. BACKFIRING IN CARBURETOR AND EXHAUST
a) Plugs clogged and points too wide
a) Clean or renew. Correct gap. 20 thou
b) Oil, dirt or water on plug electrode
b) Clean
c) Pre-ignition
c1) Fit a plug with a higher heat degree
c2) Check that the ignition is correctly set
d) Condensor loose in housing
d) Tighten
e) Contact breaker points loose
e) Re-adjust and tighten
f) Insufficient supply of fuel reaching carburetor
f) Mixture too thin, see "adjusting the carburetor" section
7. CLUTCH NOT WORKING PROPERLY
a) Gears engage abruptly. Discs incorrectly set.
a) Check cables and adjust
b) Gears insufficiently lubricated
b) Top up oil level
c) Slipping. Weak springs, lined plates burnt or worn.
c) Slaken off cable or replace springs or plates as required
d) Gears do not engage. Too much play in cable.
d) Adjust cable or replace if necessary
8. ABNORMAL FUEL CONSUMPTION
Too high a level of mixture in the carburetor due to:
a) Tickler stuck
a) Release
b) Punctured float
b) Replace
c) Flood rod does not fir correctly
c) Clean or renew rod and lid of float chamber
d) Blocked or dirty air filter
d) Wash in clean petrol
e) Choke control stuck in closed position
e) Release, oil rod. Fit new clip and spring if required
f) Worn jet, hole enlarged
f) Fit new jet No.60
g) Worn needle
g) Replace
h) Ignition retardation
h) Retime ignition flywheel, see "resetting or adjusting the timing" section
i) Lack of compression
See "insufficient compression" section above
9. CONTROL CABLE IS NOT WORKING CORRECTLY
a) Too slack or too tight
a) Lubricate / readjust or replace as necessary
10. TIGHTENING THE STEERING
See "handlebars and steering adjustment" section; Lubricate or renew any parts as necessary
11. LOOSE STEERING
Tighten the locking ring. Check as above and/or see the "handlebars and steering adjustment" section
